A History of Carl Lindberry Post 1009
Updated On: Jul 30, 2018

CARL LINDBERRY POST N0. 1009 “Just a Dream”

As related by Ralph Hagey
During World War ll Larry Gruber, President of IPEU (international Photo Engravers Union) Local 5, had a vision of forming an American Legion Post comprised of Local 5 members.

In 1944 President Gruber asked Ed McAvaney and Bill Meyers, both World War l veterans, to undertake the task. ln 1945 they obtained a charter for the new Post. The following year as the servicemen returned, they were asked to join. A charter was signed by all who joined and Ed McAvaney was appointed Commander in 1945 and elected for a full term in 1946.

A suitable name had to be chosen so it was decided to put all the names of Local 5 lPEU members who had lost their lives during World War ll into a hat. The name of Carl Lindberry was drawn and, with permission of his family, we became the Carl Lindberry Post 1009.

We were the only all Union Engravers Post in the world. In the early 1960's Local 5 IPEU merged with Local 4 ALA (Amalgamated Lithographers of America) at which time the Engravers welcomed the Lithographers to join our Post. We remained the only all Union Engraver-Lithographer Post in the world. Today our membership stands at 152 and we welcome all veterans to join our Post. We have had many happy years due to the efforts of a lot of members, some of whom have passed on but will never be forgotten. Some comrades have retired and left the Chicago area but still maintain their membership and stay in contact.

The vitality of our Post is still seen on the 4th Friday of every month when 30 to 40 members come together for an evening of camaraderie along with continuing our efforts to help fellow veterans and our country.
Larry, your ‘dream has been fulfilled!
